Today’s shot is courtesy of PW’s newest photo challenge.
The theme for the new Photography Assignment is…MACRO. I love macro photography, after dabbling in it for a short time a couple of years ago. I love how beautifully a macro lens opens up a whole world.
I LOVE messing around with macros. If you browse around my flickr stream, you’ll find tons of your typical florals and creepy crawlers (some good, some oh so horrid), the kind of stuff that just begs for a macro lens. Fun!
But I wanted to try something different today, so I did this …

Cookies!
I’ve been asked before if I have a lightbox, and the answer is no. I’d like one though, if you’re giving them away. I take shots like this on top of my stove. Yes, my stove. Today I fooled around with some fancy lighting (which would be the light in the hood vent with a paper towel cover) (have a fire extinguisher handy should you attempt) and some fancy flash equipment (a coffee filter over my pop-up flash) and this is the result. Feel free to emulate my trashy ways.
PW’s contest runs until … ummmm, hell I don’t know. But she starts posting groups (photos that stand out in the stream) on Monday, so I guess you have the weekend at the very least, and you’re allowed to post one photo to the flickr group per day. I think I’ll stick with this challenge and see what else I can catch.

I need to work on macro, I don’t actually have a macro lens, but it’s on my list. For now I just set my camera on the little flower dummy button and that’s as close to macro as I can get.
Gonna have to go try our you set up and see what I can do with it. Don’t worry, fire extinguisher will be close by!

The coffee filter works pretty well. I had meant to mention that I ordered a lightscoop and I totally forgot all about it.

Posted at 00:54h, 10 AprilI LOVE it. Not only the photo (which I came from on Flickr), but the fantastic “homemade” fancy photography tips. I’ve often looked for McGuyver-type photo tricks, and this is a great one. Thanks for posting! I’m going to have to try the stove hood light trick very soon.

Posted at 02:18h, 10 AprilThanks Leslie! Always fun to find new (free!) ways to do stuff, right? My home doesn’t have a lot of available light, natural or otherwise. I stuck a 100 watt bulb in the stove hood :)

Posted at 07:06h, 10 Aprilthis is great Jan! You make me laugh with your descriptions! I don’t have a macro lens–well it’s a really poor quality lens that I can kind of zoom in and use as a macro– so I may have to try the automatic macro setting.

You don’t need a lens :)
I keep hearing people talking about tubes and stuff, but I am unedumacated … I should find out what they’re talking about. I don’t know about any of that stuff.
